The seals appearing below may be displayed only on web pages belonging to the recipients of Honorary Awards conferred by the Delian Society. Designed by Joseph Dillon Ford on 20 April 2004, the central medallion contains the head of Apollo and is based on an original photograph of a marble statue of the god now displayed at the Louvre. The lyre and laurel wreath, both symbols closely associated with the Delian god of music, are shown below, while the interlaced initials of the Society appear above. The Greek letter "delta" within the laurel wreath is emblematic not only of "Delos," the island on which Apollo was born, but also of the essential triadic structure on which tonal music is based. The cult of Apollo effectively ceased to exist in ancient times, and Christianity ultimately became the dominant religion in the Western world. But the image of Apollo remains one of the most important and powerful symbols in the history of tonal music. He is personified in Monteverdi's Orfeo (1607), Mozart's Apollo and Hyancinthus (1767), Igor Stravinsky's Apollon musagètes, (1928) and Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice (1973).
